Intel missed homegrown talent hiring goal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Computer chip maker Intel has fallen short of a goal set by Sandoval County to make sure 60 percent of the new hires for its Rio Rancho plant are New Mexico residents.

Intel officials told Sandoval County commissioners this week that only 35 percent of the 349 employees it hired in 2011 were state residents.

That's the third time in five years the company didn't meet the goal.

The Albuquerque Journal reports the county set the benchmark in 2004 when it approved a major revenue bond for Intel.

Under the agreement, Intel must pay the county $100,000 for educational initiatives when it fails to meet the hiring requirement.

Intel says there just aren't enough of the highly skilled workers it needs at the plant in New Mexico.

Bernalillo water pipe repaired; water to be flowing soon

Thousands of people remain without water in the town of Bernalillo as a water main break cut the flow Wednesday morning  to homes, businesses and schools.

Our Mike Daniels tells us crews are trying to fix the break in an 8-inch main line located along 550 and 313.

Crews had to order a special part from Texas two days ago to fix the line. When they went in to work on a live patch on the water main leak, that is when the pipe blew.

A number of Bernalillo school children were sent home because of a lack of water in their schools on Wednesday.

Bernalillo High School, Bernalillo Middle School, Bernalillo Elementary, Carroll Elementary, Village Academy and La Escuela Elementary closed Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The water main has also closed lanes of 550 westbound at 313 - eastbound lanes are not affected.

KOB has a crew at the scene - stay with us for updates.
